Some people rely on the old tried and true ecovery quotes and never bother to look elswhere for quotes to help gain perspective on life, self rleiance, friendship or spirtiuality.

When Emerson sat down to write probably didn’t intend for his words to become recovery quotes of believe how influential he would become for many of us in the world’s recovering community.

Nonetheless, the impact his writings have to provide strength and insight in the understanding of how you can become the “master of your destiny and captain of your fate.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) has the honor of founding America’s transcendentalist philosophical movement. He is still considered one of America’s most intellectual thinkers. Emerson mentored Henry David Thoreau. Emerson’s influence on Thoreau led to his greatest essay Civil Disobedience which further influenced other great men such as Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King.

Ralph Waldo Emerson’s legacy is found within these timeless recovery quotes which can spark wisdom, self-reliance, and spirituality.

Recovery quotes such as this one you find, Emerson encouraging you to become self-sufficient and reliant. In your active addiction, you isolated from all that is good in your life, blindly followed where heroin and other drugs led you and felt resentment, shame, and guilt towards yourself and others.

In recovery, you learn to trust yourself in finding the happiness you seek. Once you have chosen a path that leads to the fulfillment of your past drug-seeking behaviors, actions, and attitudes dissolve.

Recovery is choosing to follow the beat of your own drum. Fortify your position on a path leading to good moral character, and believing the fact that heroin controlled the decisions you made. Emerson advocates for you to follow your inner voice instead of the path which leads down the road leading to isolation.

It would be best if you never chose, count on, or rely on another person, God, or thing to provide you with the happiness you seek-

The recovery movement has never been more prosperous than it is today. In the past, there was only one pathway for recovery. Inpatient drug treatment, AA/NA, and a sponsor.

It worked for many and still does. However, many of us couldn’t conform to such rigorous demands of powerlessness and believing a God would remove our insanity and desire to use drugs at any cost.

Today, there are many pathways for recovery leading to the same place – fulfillment in a life of recovery. You can forge your own path, and no one can tell you it is wrong.

Emerson’s recovery quote gives you the courage to blaze your own path using the tools and skills you have borrowed from others upon your journey in recovery.

“Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising up every time we fail.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Some people want you to believe relapse is part of recovery.

I don’t buy it.

Relapse has its place. It happens. What happens more often is a simple lapse back to unwanted thoughts, behaviors, or drug-use. You might wanna call it a slip, a pause, or bump in the road. But it doesn’t have to become a full-blown relapse!

It doesn’t always lead back to a life of active addiction. Heavy hitters in hardcore AA rooms want you to believe you have to go back to square one, start over, and DO NOT PASS GO. Backward ass thinking like this creates fear, self-stigma, and shame.

I’m not sure how the hell this helps.
So don’t buy into this crap. If you experience a lapse, get back on your feet, dust the cobwebs out of your head, and pick up where you left off.

Take some time and recognize what went wrong and how you can better prepare yourself to face this difficult situation next time.

Keeping Emerson’s recovery quote in mind will help you find the courage to pick yourself up and get back into your system of recovery if you suffer a lapse in thinking, acting, or using.

A lapse is temporary and doesn’t have to lead to a full-blown relapse. Pick yourself up. Learn from the slip. And find happiness in life that you seek.

Nothing, not a cathartic sneeze or heart-stopping orgasm could compare to the rush you felt after releasing the plunger for a 5 bag shot into the main vein,

However, it didn’t take long for those highs to fade away. Once physical dependence reigned, the fear of withdrawal kept you coming back several times a day.

Find the strength to break this routine and grow into the person you have only known in your dreams. Find a group of peers who you can relate with, whose recovery you admire and ask for the guidance and support to live the life of your dreams.

We’ve all been addicted to something –drugs, booze, cigarettes, sex, porn, shopping, another person, Facebook, Instagram, the internet, gambling, masturbation –so we can all relate to the mental anxiety of addiction on some level. Of course, some people struggle with addiction more than others.

But you can make a decision to clear the table, reduce the harm and consequences of your actions, and start making small changes. Consciously decide what steps to take and why. Mindfully life in the moment and choose to become the person you desire to be.

More Ralph Waldo Emerson Recovery Quotes: “Life is a journey, not a destination.”

The first time I got sober, I feared what I would do once the cravings ceased to exist. What would life be like without needs and triggers, drug-seeking behaviors, and my constant diatribes about the ‘good ole days’?

After three years of abstinence, I felt I had reached my destination. I let my anger, resentment, and pig-headed stubbornness drive me from the rooms of AA and NA. My hubris didn’t allow me to get phone numbers to reach peers whose recovery I favored. I was gonna do this recovery thing on my own.

It took about 3 years from that day for my relapse to reach its peak one morning when I couldn’t find any pills. I swore to myself I’d never stick a needle full of heroin in my arm again. I had no remorse regret or shame the morning I worked up the fix. I knew the demon I was about to unleash. All that mattered was feeling better.

This time around, I have a better understanding of the word recovery. I have a system for recovery. I work each morning. My recovery is a process. It is not perfection, but progress. Progression towards becoming the best version of myself.

The system is working to be 1% – 5% better than you went to bed the night before. Therefore a destination can never be reached. You (and me) can always improve your life. Once you reach a goal, amend it, change it, outdo it. There is always room for improvement.

Work, Play, and Love harder.

If you want the best out of your life, you have to know your why. You have to see the reason you get out of bed each morning with a purpose and childlike excitement.

To engineer the best possible outcomes and fulfillment in recovery, you need a plan designed around your guiding principles, values, and why.

Once you understand why you are doing something, the work you do becomes meaningful, purposeful, and achievable.

How to find your WHY?

Now ask yourself –– Why am I in recovery, or What do I want from recovery and WHy?

Write the answer down. But you are not done. Ask yourself what you’ll achieve and why? Then write your answer done.

In recovry quotes such as this one of Emerson’s he tells us to live each day like its the best of the year. You have not reached the recovery community by luck. You have made decisions to make changes, work harder, and work through the pain of past emotional, physical, or sexual trauma.

You have grieved your past. Your addiction. Your drugs. Now you find yourself living life for the first time without the burden of craving and fear. Celebrate this day and live each day like it is the best day of your life. After all, it is a gift of recovery.

Remember, your worst day sober is always better than your best day high. You might not believe this to be correct, but when you have the freedom to choose with the physical constraints from heroin, nothing will stop you from celebrating life.

“Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Are you ready to kick heroin and other drugs to the curb? And try to live a life free from self-limiting belief, doubt, worry, or fear? Recovery is all of this and more, but you have to do something that will make you uncomfortable. The men in women in the rooms who have found a way to live life one day at a time all took a step to try something different. You can do it, too.

Yeah, it’s easy waking up in the morning, doing a shot, hustling money, and getting off again. We felt like masters, but in fact, we were puppets. Once the drug started directing our lives, our will, choices, and actions were controlled by fear.

Make a decision to slow down, to change at the thought, to wait an extra hour or two before you work up that fix. Push yourself to be 1% better today than you were yesterday, and see where you are in 6 months.

Change takes practice.

But you have to decide to try something new because there is always something in your life that can be better.

I have always hidden behind social anxiety, so I make excuses to meet old friends or make new ones. But my recovery cannot grow without constant change. I’m tearing down the barrier and confronting my self-limiting belief about social ineptitude.

What can you do differently to ignite change?

“The only way to have a friend is to be one.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

How many times do you leave your office in Downtown Manhattan and see the same homeless kid, flying a sign, begging for a dollar or two, to get a meal, a cheap room, or a bag of heroin?

And how many times do you look and shrug, turn up your collar to the cold, and walk on by him?

Are you a friend? Do you know what it means to be there for someone unconditionally? When I was homeless, I had a crew I would live and die for. I am sure I had their backs, but not so sure who had mine. It didn’t change who I was, though. I could never see another friend dope-sick, especially when I had a bundle or two in my pocket. I hated that feeling and wouldn’t wish it on my worse enemy.

Don’t get me wrong I didn’t run around handing out dope as if it grew on trees, but if you crashed next to me at night and I could help, I would.

Fast forward 8 years, and my recovery flourishes, and I still return to the streets in search of homeless friends. I visit with them. I get them a cup of coffee and food, help with storage unit costs if one friend is alcohol sick, I get him that can of 4 Loco or a beer. And yes, even money for a bag of junk or two. I know when I was there, I had friends who did this for me. The money doesn’t only solve the immediate problem of heroin withdrawal. It plants a seed of hope. It demonstrates my love and kindness. I show my friends if I can change they can too. (Ha, my husband doesn’t agree with me on this one.)

But are you a friend? Can someone count on you to pick up the phone, to listen without judgment, to spend time silently together, enjoying a moment without feeling uncomfortable? I am not perfect. I fail at friendship often. I take for granted friendships and stay at home, believing I am too tired to meet-up with someone for a cup of coffee.

It doesn’t take much energy. Still, I convince myself how tiring it will be to navigate the hustle and bustle of New York City after a long day of banging away at this keyboard, interviewing professionals, or researching my next assignment. I often hide behind social-anxiety. I’ve lived with it for 45 years and made it this far who knows maybe if I try something new I’ll master it. (see quote 13)

I resolve to stop making excuses, so I will be a better friend and to enjoy the company of others more.

Learn to be a friend, and you’ll never be alone.

How many times do you leave your office in Downtown Manhattan and see the same homeless kid, flying a sign, begging for a dollar or two, to get a meal, a cheap room, or a bag of heroin?

And how many times do you look and shrug, turn up your collar to the cold, and walk on by him?

Does it bother you, sicken you, piss you off to see this kid day in and out, begging? It should. Do you know you don’t have to give him money? He would appreciate a kind hello, a word acknowledging him, or a brief conversation, too

I got sober on the streets of NYC. Recovery is possible, anywhere. When the elements align, the change will happen. I didn’t go to some fancy rehab and countless AA meetings after I was discharged, I tried this traditional pathway before it wasn’t for me. I didn’t live in a sober-living and attend intensive out-patient, either.

My change was ignited by busy New Yorkers who worked in what some might call the evilest place in the world – NYC’s and the world’s financial center Wall Street. I panhandled on the corner of Pine and 100 Broadway, for years. It was my spot. Over time, I built a network of kind friends from all walks of life. Yeah, there were haters like the girl who hated her life so much she made it a point to the cross the street to kick my cup as far as she could. I angered her. But each day, the conversations I had with the people who stopped to hand me a dollar or a cup of coffee, lunch, or socks gave me hope.

And any amount of hope can go a long way.

If I didn’t show up to my spot for a couple of days, people looked for me, worried about me, and wondered where I had been. It is in their kindness that I found my way back for another go at life in recovery.

Before you decide to hold back kindness for one another time when it is more convenient to you, think again at how powerful a change you could make today, right now, at this moment, and do it.

Recovery is a process for change. It is required to rewire how you perceive yourself. In the past, my thoughts limited me, crippled me, and kept me stuck in a cycle for self-hatred, destruction, belief.

The story I told myself didn’t have a happy ending because I was a mistake, worthless, and undeserving of another’s love. There weren’t many happy thoughts rattling around in my brain.

It all changed. At first, it was gradual, but it exploded, and exponential change occurred. I’m stuck, and my thoughts block my path for advancement. Self-doubt is vicious. The cycle is self-limiting beliefs that cloud my judgment and prevent my upward movement.

I know I can change work through this plateau with positive thoughts, journaling, and affirmation.

Why do I believe this?

Because I am no longer sitting on a street corner in NYC, begging people for money and waiting to die alone with a needle buried in my arm.

You, too, can spike a change in your life by spending time meditating, journaling, and thinking about where it is you want to be in the next year, 3 years, and 5 years. Get focused on your journey, see yourself becoming the person you want to grow, and start the cycle all over. It all starts in your thoughts.

Build confidence for change, happiness, and recovery one thought at a time.

Pick a quote, write it down, meditate upon it, and then put pen to paper. I like just to let my pen go where it wants to go.

Gratitude journaling has many benefits.

Before I started to use my journal for keepintrack of what I was grateful each day, I was full of resentment, anger, and always battling negative self-talk.

Gratitude helped me to overcome past emotional states of uselessness and frustration. It helped me to learn to forgive, love my self and others, and power my recovery with happiness and certainty.

You can jumpstart your recovery, realign yourself with your purpose, and create a detailed account of your past, present and future.

Who has time?

You don’t need a boatload of time to start gratitude journaling. Give it a go, start with 5-10 minutes a day and maybe one session longer on the weekends to dive deep into the events of your week.

If your in recovery you should be spending time on self-reflection weekly, so why not do it with gratitude?

What have you to lose — about 10-15 hours a month?

If it doesn’t work, you can take this time back and quit. But you have todo it a solid, no half-steppin’ hear.

But before you say hell no, think of how much more fantastic life will become when you start 10x’ing your happiness, rehaping your past, living in the present, and imagining your future.

Most of the work I do in recovery is done in the early morning when I am fresh. I feel it sets the tone for the day, puts recovery first, and sets me up to win.

Gratitude journaling has become a major part of my system. It helps me measure where I am at, my gains, and reflect upon where I need to work harder. While gratitude journaling I have learned how to forgive myself and stop living with regret. I have reshaped my past. The endings of the stories I told myself for years have changed. The purpose and lessons I learned are much different compared to the stories I told myself when I was strung-out and homeless.

How to start gratitude journaling and 10X your vision of the world.

1 – Make time to write each day

Find time each day to write down 5 to 10 things you are grateful for and how each makes you feel.

You can do this while you are waiting for your morning coffee to brew. You don’t have to spend a lot of time to start injecting gratitude into your daily system for recovery.

You don’t have to go out and buy an expensive leather-bound journal (but you can if you wish) any notebook or app on your smartphone will do.

You can create a new list each day. As your daily gratitude list becomes a habit.

2 – Once a week make your gratitude journaling session a bit longer

Start this session by choosing 1, 2, or 3 thankful tidings from your list. Break each down into many components of thankfulness you feel on all levels.

For example, instead of writing, I’m grateful for my husband doing the laundry. Write about all the energy- minutes and hours. He puts into doing this task and collecting dirty clothes, towels, and bedding. Loading the washing machine, making sure he has detergent and fabric softener. If not, he must go to the store to purchase more. Packing clothes in the dryer or hanging out on the clothesline to air dry, Ironing, folding, and putting the clothes away.

Write about:

• How your clothes smell afterward?

• How fresh and clean they feel?

• And most of all, how does this consistent act of generosity make you feel?

When journaling about something such as washing clothes from a mindful perspective, you will begin to experience gratitude authentically.

Be mindful of and think of events that took you by surprise. What happened during that you didn’t expect that led to your being happy and grateful.

4 – Experience life as a gift

Have you ever watched children at play, discovering new ways to enjoy themselves, or visiting someplace new? For example, when was the last time you went to the zoo. Did you listen to the excitement of your children’s voices as you came around the corner and found yourself staring face to face with a lion, tiger, or bear? (forget that oh my B.S. – you left Oz when you put the needle down!)

Learn to write about your days with the excitement of a child seeing the ocean or the Grand Tetons for the first time. Find the awe inside of everything you have done the previous day and be grateful to experience clean and sober.

Learn to record your entries and moments as if each were a gift given to you. Take time and express how each gift has made you feel, created a feeling of happiness and joy, or improving your wellness, peace of mind, and health.

Over the years, I kicked dope countless times, most of these kicks were to get a handle on my ever-growing habit. The thought of me kicking dope forever was too large a concept to wrap my head around. The first 40 hours of withdrawal were painless. I just slipped into a comatose state, but once I awoke the last 30 to 50 hours were the tough part. I managed to get through and pull myself together.

Once it was over, I picked myself up from the floor of the squat or my mother’s couch and readied myself to meet up with old friends. You know the crew you disconnected from when you started shooting heroin. The friends who didn’t approve of you doing junk. Eventually, I would head out, to the local pub for a pint of ale and joint with my old crew. Once I entered the pub and situated myself, I sit down and hear the music. I mean really hear the music -like it was the first time I had ever heard such beautiful sounds. It was beautiful, and it always brought tears to my eyes.

Your gratitude journal is a place where you can capture these moments. Write about how grateful you are to experience all the gifts life offers you each day. The more you exercise your gratitude to muscle, the more you will come to appreciate the living, breathing, awe-inspiring wonders of our world connecting with you.

When you practice gratitude, you will never feel alone.

Don’t just write about what has happened that day.

Take time to be grateful for the changes you have made in your life. If you dive deep into why you are thankful for something, you will connect with your purpose. When you have a purpose in life, you have direction. You have something to live for, strive for, a reason to exist and connect with the world you previously sought solace from.

Take note of these changes. How have the changes resulted in positive outcomes, prepared you to handle high-risk situations, and helped you hurdle over some roadblocks to your recovery?

Try gratitude journaling about how you had to continually protect your addiction by creating excuses for your whereabouts, punctuality, lack of money, etc.

Recovery puts an end to you having excuses ready to recite at those who care about your wellbeing.

When journaling about avoiding adverse outcomes or feelings, express how grateful you are for not having to continue this behavior.

6 – Who gives you hope to carry on

Who are you grateful for? What person can you thank today?

Use your gratitude journal to explain why this person deserves your thanks and admiration. Write a letter of thankfulness to the person in the pages of your journal. You never have to send the draft because it is in your journal, but you can post a greeting card, or at best an email, phone call or text. In the draft of your letter take time to explain how different your life is because this person is part of your recovery.

Whose day can you make better by taking the time and sending them a greeting card expressing your thanks?

7- What do you consistently take for granted?

Yeah, that sentence causes some anxiety. I get it. We all take some things in life for granted. The universe puts me in situations over and over again. I want to believe it hopes one day the lightbulb will turn on and stay on, so I don’t have to feel shitty about certain shortcomings again and again.

Write about what you seem to take for granted in your life consistently. Instead, start taking these new aspects of your life for granted. Train yourself to start feeling positive about yourself. Express your self-worth, self-esteem, and the virtues of good moral character you possess. Be grateful for who you are today.
You can use your gratitude journal for honest self-reflection and spend time honoring what you fail to be thankful for each day.

When I decided to start journaling again, I chose to be more mindful and consistent. I made gratitude journaling a habit I practice to this day. It is incorporated into my system for recovery. It takes about 15 minutes tops.

Even though the exercise is only 15 minutes long, in the beginning, it was challenging to make myself do it with consistency. It has now become a habit. I follow the pattern listed above and one day a week. I pick three entries from my journal archives and dive deep into why I am grateful, how it makes me feel. I try to incorporate my 5 senses into the exercise.

I’m starting to see positive changes in my attitude towards myself, my husband, and others in the community. I am less angry, more relaxed, and have an overall positive outlook on life. As far as my recovery is concerned – Gratitude journaling helps me stay focused on working my system for recovery. In gratitude journaling, I have learned to forgive myself and stop regretting my past. I appreciate those who have helped me along the way, but I still have work to do, lessons to learn, so I can help guide others in their recovery journey.

Are you ready to start gratitude journaling and 10X your happiness?

It is a simple practice. It doesn’t require much time. New research proves expressing thankfulness in a gratitude journal will have positive effects on your health.

Dr. Robert Emmons writes, “One of the best ways to cultivate gratitude is to establish a daily practice in which you remind yourself of the gifts, grace, benefits, and good things you enjoy.”

Usually, bloggers, journalists, even your neighbors start buzzing about gratitude during Thanksgiving.

Unfortunately, once Thanksgiving has come and gone, gratitude gets folded up and packed away.

Many of us myself included tuck it away, with the festive dark-orange tablecloth, holiday candles, and your grandmother’s god-awful turkey sweater.

Unfortunately, this is a huge mistake, especially in recovery — practice gratitude every day. Learning to see the world through the lens of gratitude will 10x the happiness you feel in your recovery.

Research has shown that practicing gratitude creates positive life changes in regards to your physical and mental health, helps establish healthy relationships, and leads to happiness.

I know we are all busy people. Our lives, families, careers, and your system for recovery plans all demand our attention. Taking time to add another task to your overflowing schedule doesn’t seem feasible. Maybe you are on the fence about whether a gratitude journal can help you find happiness in your recovery journey. You know keeping a gratitude journal sounds like a good idea. But when the chips fall, you don’t believe a journal full of thankfulness will keep the needle out of your arm any more than adhering to a balanced diet.

I get it; recovery is subjective.

When you were using life seemed so much easier, but hell, you only had one goal to maintain, and that was escaping the hectic, chaotic nature of life. Going with the flow was comfortable, with a vein full of heroin.

Recovery = ACTION

All your recovery wants and needs from you is for you to show up. To do something positive each day to make you better than yesterday.

Recovery is a time of transformation. Learning to live life without relying on alcohol or other drugs takes courage and time. While actively using, you lost sight of your life’s purpose and the goals you sought to achieve in life. It doesn’t matter how you came into your recovery. What matters is how you plan to maintain the freedom from the obsession to use.

Taking time out of your hectic schedule for self-reflection and assessing your progress toward your recovery goals is vital to reaching the ultimate version of yourself.

No matter how chaotic my lifestyle had become, I maintained a journal of some sort. I always found journaling a way to maintain a semblance of sanity. Or a way to help me remember how insane life had become.

I used my journal to stay connected to myself. Granted, I can’t read many of the entries cause my handwriting suffers from the heroin nod, but I still let the words flow out of me, and this kept me grounded.

After a relapse, I started taking my recovery seriously. I made it a point to record my feelings, plans, objectives, and review my progress in a journal daily. Eventually, I added an exercise to express gratitude in my journaling sessions.

Here are three practical reasons why a gratitude journal is so powerful to your recovery:

1 – Your gratitude journal shows you insight about your life in recovery

A gratitude journal will help you answer questions about yourself and your recovery. Taking time to record your daily progress helps you to see patterns in your thinking and behaviors. Your journal provides insight. It will help you

• Realize who you are,

• Facts about your life addiction have hidden for many years,

• Revisit the similar behaviors you wish to change that you display again and again.

In short, keeping a journal allows you to be honest and open with yourself about yourself.

A few weeks ago, I set out to see my personal pastor. It had been months since I visited. When I got to the church, I found out that he would be in Rwanda for six months. I was angry at myself for putting my shit first. Losing contact with the people I claim to care about is easy for me. It is a problem and it needs to stop. As I was walking back to the 1 train, tail between my legs, I felt super sleazy, low, and angry. I realized I had to something about this recurring theme in my life.

Later that evening, I made time to write in my journal about how I take relationships with friends, peers, and mentors for granted.

Once I got the hardcore self-loathing out of my system, my perspective changed. I started to examine other positive changes that surfaced during my visit to Lower Manhattan Community Church. Years ago, I would have blamed Ryan, blamed my addiction and the past, and never assume responsibility. Today, I am thankful for my accountability. I openly admitted while speaking with others at LMCC.

There is hope for Johnny.

While journaling, it became evident I didn’t blame Ryan, my freelancing job, or Eddie (my husband). Nor did I create an arbitrary alignment between Jupiter and Saturn for my taking my friendship with Ryan for granted. Instead, I looked at my failure head-on. When I met Ryan, I was homeless with 2 years sober and always teetering on the edge of relapse. Since meeting him, much has changed in my life, and I now have a system for recovery.

Even though many changes have been made, I still tend to trick myself into believing I don’t have time to reach out and connect with others.

I am used my gratitude journal to express my feelings and understand where I need to work harder in my recovery. Gratitude journaling also showed me the positive changes I’ve made. In the past, I would have let my shortcomings eat away at me. I would’ve leaned into regret and self-pity, and let it eat away at me. It would eventually turn into anger. Instead of allowing how I felt to absorb me and knock me off balance, I used the habit of gratitude journaling to look at this event subjectively.

Your gratitude journal can work as a tool to help you self-assess your progress in recovery. Gaining insight about your progress helps you to tweak your system for recovery. You’ll learn to spot the areas in your life, still causing you discomfort and pain, and figure out what to do about it.

2 – Your gratitude journal helps you develop a discipline for positive thinking

In recovery, it is easy to drift away and focus on all that is bad in your life. Feelings of regret, guilt, and shame push their way into your thoughts, causing you to feel poorly about yourself and behavior.

When you recollect moments from your day, you can see where you have positively changed. Your journal helps build muscle memory. For example, when you work through a craving to use heroin or other drugs, without using writing about it reinforces your success.

A simple plan to follow:

• Detail the event

• How were you feeling?

• What did you do when the craving to use struck you like a freight train?

• Call a peer, hit a meeting, or pull out your journal and write about the feeling?

Following this plan reinforces affirmative action and builds muscle memory and reinforcement.

The more you see yourself acting positively, the better you will start to feel about the future of your recovery.

Reinforcing all of your positive accomplishments helps you to develop a discipline for positive thinking. Practicing positivity in the lines of your journal helps you to create new beliefs about yourself. As your gratitude journal fills with accounts of happiness, thankfulness, triumph over addictive behaviors, and unwanted behaviors, you’ll create evidence-based patterns of positive change. Your self-worth, faith in yourself and your community, and your right to be happy are restored.

During one of those days when you can’t seem to shake off the ‘fuck, it’s’ defeating your badass self from having a fantastic day in recovery, crack open your gratitude journal. Within the pages, you’ll find numerous reasons for you to celebrate your recovery with gratitude and thankfulness. Rereading your gratitude journal could make all the difference in getting you back on track and feeling positive about your life in recovery.

When you incorporate a gratitude journal in your system for recovery, you are building a database of:

The ball is in your court.

Now that you’re sober, it seems everyone and everything demands a piece of you. Some days just dragging your ass to a meeting takes all the energy you can gather up. However, once you get there and see the smiling faces and chat it up with a few friends, you feel better, connected, and glad you found the strength to show up.

If you follow #recovery or #justfortoday on Instagram multiple pathways and new therapies to kick your recovery in the ass, it needs flash across your IG Feed, with lightning speed. Each day you can watch a new IG Live session about what a fellow peer in the recovering world is doing today to stay sober and how you can do it too.

And you know what? If it worked for them, it might work for you. Then again, it might not. You never know unless you try, and what have you got to lose? So nothing is stopping you from taking 5 minutes out of your day to spend expressing thankfulness.

Gratitude and Instagram

Try keeping your gratitude journal on your IG feed. Vow to take 15 minutes a day to create a post about what you are grateful for. It won’t hurt you. You’ll express thankfulness for a loved, friend, recovery coach, sponsor, or a stranger who ‘did you a solid’ earlier in the day.

Nothing but you. Why don’t you decide to try it out? Use your phone, make it simple.

If it doesn’t work, you can go back to your old recovery plan and maintain your sobriety.

But what if you take action, show up, and it works?

Then you have gained so much more. Then like Emmon’s said, you could start experiencing life through a lens of gratefulness.
